Q: Whats a topic on a concept which has influenced early modern European history is that of Individualism?
A concept which has influenced early modern European history is that of Individualism. Provide a brief description of this concept. Then choose one figure from each of the following movements who you feel exemplifies Individualism: the Renaissance, The Protestant Reformation and the Enlightenment. Discuss the contributions of each, incorporating the concept of Individualism throughout your paper.
A: The concept of individualism stems from the formation of the Greek empire and its founding principals through philosphies such as democracy. This concept gave people a level of free thought and will from Plato"s republic. The renaisance was interested in the ideas of science and art,the protestant movement shifted its view away from Rome as the supreme authority with religious ideals. The Age of enlightenment shifted its philosphies towards the logic & science of facts, this challenged the religious ideals of the church because for once philosphers could prove & disprove that god didnt really exist.
This opened up dialogue for the masses to really think for themselves, taken from Decartes Cognito Ergo sum i think therefore i am,in a way this forging of ideas spelled a tsumani for religion later on.
People could question the churches ideals as they really could think for themselves, their thoughts werent governed by a higher power as first thought ?
Religion in a sense was the manifestaion of men in authority used to control the masses,as Karl Marx later reiterated that religion was the opium of the people. science in a way later during the 19th century gave greater autonomy from the cghurch when Charles Darwin question it through his thesis "The origins of life",which essentially proved that man had originated from Africa through his studies in S.America.The church from now would never really gain the power as they previously held over the masses, with Nietszche"s statement God is dead and his superman theories man was fianlly justifiably the ruler of his own universe, thus giving him the rightfull ploy to be an individual
Q: Are American Protestant Christians known for their ignorance of the origins and history of Christianity?
For example: They are taught what happened 2000 years ago, They are taught what happened 300 years ago,
But they have absolutely no clue to what happened in the 1700 years in between?
Mark777, I just go on my own personal experience...I've yet to meet an American Evangelical/Fundamentalist/Baptist/ etc who knows jack squat about Christian Church history.
A: In my experience, Protestants seem to know little about Catholicism -- which means they know nothing about the history of their religion prior to 1500.
In my experience, most Protestants know nothing about the translation errors of the King James Version of the Bible -- and accept what is written as fact.
In my experience, Protestants do not understand that the Catholic Bible has been unchanged since the 4th century (when it was first assembled). They do not understand that the Protestant Bible is an edited version of the Catholic Bible -- due to the fact that martin Luther threw out several books in the 1500s.
Q: I really need help on some history questions?
I'm falling behind in history, and I really need help with identifications. If you could please tell me the root or cause of; most important fact(s); and the impact of any of the following terms, I would appreciate it!
Reformation (The protestant reformation, dealing with Martin Luther and John Calvin)
"Brown Gold" (Around the time of the Jamestown settlement)
King Philip's uprising
Restoration Colonies
Dominion of New England
Thanks for any help you can give.
A: Ok, first of all you can google these topics and find all the facts you want.
The Protestant Reformation was a popular uprising against an increasingly corrupted and overbearing religious body (the Holy Roman Catholic Church) that was so entwined with government that it was almost impossible to tell where one started and one stopped. The Reformation was a demand by the people for democracy, for choice, and for freedom. Without the Reformation we would not have had successful civil uprisings, including the American Revolution.
Brown Gold refers to tobacco. John Rolfe created a more palatable strain of tobacco from the original Virginia tobacco that grew wild, and it became the primary cash crop for the colony. Jamestown was dying as a productive settlement before tobacco.
King Philips's War (it was by far more than an uprising) was a war between the Massachusetts colonists and tribes within the Wampanoag Indian Federation. Colonists and the Indigenous people were not able to live together, which is understandable considering the colonists believed the land was theirs by what we now consider manifest destiny (God gave it to them because they were superior) and the Indigenous people believed it was theirs because, well, they were there first. The war was 1675-1676, and in terms of lives lost is the most devastating war in American history.
King Charles II gave land to his supporters after being restored to the crown in the late 17th century. Pennsylania and the Carolinas were restoration colonies, for example.
The Dominion of New England was James II's way of trying to control an increasingly uncontrolable America. Between America's refusal to obey key legislation and both the French and Indians becoming more openly hostile, the British thought they would make everything better by uniting all the colonies under one administration. It failed miserably, and the colonies were not successfully unified until the First Continental Congress. This unification was successful because they all had a common enemy: the British.

N is funny, because I think a lot of people do it, regardless of their religion!
Q: If you compare the history of the Sunnis in the Arab world, do they resemble Catholics or Protestants?
Are they the "true" Muslims, or a liberal sect that was obsessed with the Koran?
Can you compare the struggles of Sunni vs. Shiite with Protestant vs. Catholic?
Apples and oranges are both fruits, no?
A: not the same Islam differences are about secession not beliefs or rituals.See this link

Q: Is there a reliable History of the Priesthood held by Jesus from either a Catholic or Protestant source?
One which includes the changes in ordination, offices, breaks in the chain....?
A: Sounds like you are asking about Apostolic Succession, which refers to the unbroken chain of authority which stretches back to Jesus Christ Himself who breathed on the Apostles and sent them into the world saying "He who hears you hears Me."
Apostolic succession is the line of bishops stretching back to the apostles. All over the world, all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the time of the apostles, something that is impossible in Protestant denominations (most of which do not even claim to have bishops).
There is a good article with historical background here

Pax Vobiscum+
(Peace be to you all)
Q: Who was it that said, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant"?
A: this is a trick question, isn't it? I ought to know this or something...
Cardinal Newman, bless his soul...(I had to look it up)
er, can I have my reward now? meh, it was nice adding that tidbit of knowledge to my thirsty soul.
Q: Excuse me atheists, but did protestant sects kill catholics at any time in history?
Some one says that protestants killed catholics and wouldn't let them have jobs and stuff, is this true?
and on a side note, it's kinda hard to blame just protestants, since there is not one protestant church/sect, but there is one Catholic church, see what I mean?
what really happened in Northern Ireland?
I've never heard of these stories.
Oh, you mean the movie Braveheart was about this war?
Well I never did research on that movie, I was much younger when I saw it, but I knew England was invading scotland so that's why I thought what I thought. :)
A: Yes.
In England in 15 century onwards.
What really happened in Ireland?
Ireland was invaded by the English many centuries ago and throughout its history various monarchs/leaders either tried to exterminate the Irish (see Cromwell) or displace them - the Protestants in Northern Ireland were largely Scots who moved over and were supported by the then then government as the majority.
Often, catholic plots to assassinate or displace the monarchs were fomented in Ireland (or France) hence one of the "justifications" for killing catholics.
When Ireland won independence in 1917 (I think) the Northern counties stayed "British" and the sectarian violence really kicked off. Initially the British Army was there to prevent violence by the Protestants on the Catholics, but soon became targets in themselves - as did people in England itself.
Actually, sectarian violence between catholics & protestants happened in England itself throughout 16 - 18 centuries as the monarchs changed, as some were catholic - and burned Protestants, and some were protestants and did the same to the catholics. It's just lovely how understanding christians are!
Q: "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant"?
Yor comments.
A: True.
Q: Help me create a protest sign representing the thoughts of one of the Protestant Reformers.?
For my history class, I'm supposed to create a protest sign representing the thoughts of one of the Protestant Reformers. I'm not catchy enough to come up with any slogans or designs. Can you help me out? I can put together your idea on photoshop and send it to you when I'm finished :)
A: Indulgences are indulgent!
No mass for the masses!
Q: Would Protestant American Christians benefit at all from reading "A History of Christianity"?
A: Hi, Would it make any difference they are so closed minded about events before the Reformation and think that everybody else is going to Hell but that they are saved?
This closed mindset approach to Christianity has caused great divisions in the faith and as they believe that they are morally and spiritually superior, you cannot reason with them.
In actual fact there is only one church that was founded on the Apostle St.Peter and that is the Catholic church and you cannot have two bodies of Christ, it is not possible, so in actual fact Protestants are actually schismatic Catholics and have placed themselves outside of the true church.
Q: What percentage of protestant Christians have a bachelors degree or higher?
It seems to me that most Christians do not have much of an education, primarily because of the things they say in relation to history and science. Have there been any studies done to show which percentage of Christians in the USA or elsewhere have a bachelors degree or higher?
A: Most of the Christians I know have a pretty high level of education.
Have you ever watched the show "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" There have been Harvard Graduates who came on the show and flunked out. A degree does not mean they retain everything, or even understood everything. :) I have a degree in biology, and I specialized in behavior. I am not and will never claim to be an evolutionary biologist, nor understand everything about evolution. I know more than the average person (which leads me to believe in ID), but I'd expect a stupid question or answer from me about evolution.
Q: How many people were killed by the Pope during the Protestant Reformation?
History homework, the answers aren't in the book actually. :S
A: Perhaps the books do not mention actual numbers because to do so would only give rise to the next question: how many Catholics were ordered killed by Protestant leaders? What did Henry VIII, Elizabeth do to their Catholic subjects? What did Cromwell do to the Irish people? What about the Thirty Years War? And how many people were killed by Calvin who ruled Geneva like a totalitarian state?
Q: What is the worst religious event in American History?
I can think of a bunch for Europe, the crusades, the 30 years war, the witchcraft trials which killed thousands, the religious wars after the Protestant reformation.
For America the worst thing I can think of is the witchcraft scare at Salem, and the deaths of all of 20 people.
I've always thought that this was a major reason why America is so much more religious then Europe.
A: The Jonestown Massacre. 909 members of the People's Temple committed a mass suicide and a U.S. Congressman was murdered.
Even that was surpassed with the events of 9/11.
Q: What is the History between Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants and why can't they get along?
if you know about this I am curious what is going on over there with those people
A: Cromwell installed British prisoners as overlords in Ireland after the time of Henry VIII. The land grab rankled the Irish Catholics already in Ireland. The Brits furthered the abuse by exporting food to Britain, in an attempt to starve the Irish who would not kowtow to Parliament. The Brits then declared the provinces would be split after many uprisings, into 26 free counties and 6 slave (Ulster). The Prots living in Ulster kiss the Queen's underwear on wash day; the Catholics do not.
