Q: How should I start my paper on Muslim women and the headscarves they wear? It has to have a globalization spin?
I am in an Anthropology course (my first Graduate studies course) and it is about Globalization. We were given a list of approved topics and have to connect those topics to globalization. The topic I chose was Muslim women and the veil or headscarf they wear. I am stumped at how to connect this topic to globalization...any ideas?

A: One thing that's always interested me about more modern cultures where women wear Burkas or head scarves is how they've mingled some of the traditional rationalizations for wearing them with more contemporary feminist ideologies. A strange mash-up of ideas. I don't buy them all but they are interesting and do expose a lot of the issues facing us with globalization that are otherwise unspoken. One of the traditional reasons behind the Burka is that it helps to obscure a woman's feminine appearance, and the head scarf has the same purpose, which has the apparent effect of reducing the role gender plays in socialization and discourse. I was speaking to a woman who wore a Burka, a physicist, who explained that she found it helpful in being taken more seriously by her male peers. In as such that feminism is a form of deconstructionist philosophy and that it has been spread through globalization of media and culture it's interesting to me how it's effected people's perspective on this traditionally patriarchal belief in hiding the female form to alleviate sexual competition and gender role's influence in society. It's also interesting how this sub-text of sexual freedom or lack-there-of is characteristic of a larger and deeply rooted angst over globalization in general. I'm paraphrasing something I read a long time ago but it came to the effect of how can there be true globalization when in one culture it's taboo or even illegal for a woman to show her hair and in another encouraged for her to wear next to nothing. For all that's written about the economy and politics of globalization I think this sexual tension, easily characterized by the head scarf, is a source of much deeper conflict seeing as it's contentious even within the borders of small communities and only magnified when seen from a global perspective.

Q: What our some Traditional Muslim Women Values living in the USA?
Went out with this women and she stated I did not treat her with Traditional Muslim Values, she would not go out with me, what does this mean? Said I did not treat her like a queen, open the car door, let her walk in front. On First date, I don't want to marry her just find out who she is and what she likes. Was she trying to marry me to Muslim Values?

A: Sloppy as An American Born Muslim I find that offensive, as I certainly do not hate America, many Muslims dislike america, and really who can blame them, what with America invading, plundering, sacking, and generally terrorizing many Muslim countries, if I was from one of them I would be a little peeved as well. As for the question at hand, Well dating anyone, muslim or not is Haraam a big no no for Males and Females in Islam so she Isn't that traditional, Well those are not just muslim values that's chilvery, and now you know she wants a knight in shining armor lol. Although it is traditional Islamic values for you to pay for everything hehe , she might be trying to get you to marry her I doubt it though, she probably is just spoiled. Probably daddy's little girl always gets her way good luck. Oh and if she says it again ask her why she's dating in the first place if she cares so much about Islamic values.

Q: What is the Islamic opinion about Non-Muslim Women wearing Hijab?
Is it considered offensive? Might that change according to circumstances? I assume that this would resemble the attire of observant Muslim women in that area. Might it vary according to her motives? Am I missing the point entirely? Abou Maryam: You confuse me. I've lived in Canada for most of my life, and I've never seen a 'topless' woman on the street. True, our courts have decided that if men may expose their nipples, so may women. I think that this is good because the law does not prohibit women from nursing their babies 'in public'. Some people (who seem to have nothing better to do!) object to women nursing in public, but the nutritional and psychological benefits to the child are beyond doubt. I have seen, on the street, people whose clothing is scarcely legal and, in my opinion, provides Too Much Information. Concerning restrictions on covering - I am ashamed to say that some Canadians have made it difficult for women (to vote, for example), unless they unveil themselves.) The decision to allow Sikhs in the Royal Canadian Mountain Police to wear their turbans was, and remains, in some places, very controversial. Other examples abound.

A: Its forbidden and you will get sin for it !i

Q: Do Muslim women are allowed to wear high heels?
I heard that in Malaysia they can't wear make-up or high heels to prevent rape and protect women's dignity and morals... But I think they can in other Muslim countries like Lebanon... Have you ever seen a Muslim woman in public wearing a hijab and very high heels?

A: My family is Muslim but we are secular and liberal. My family came to the US from Eastern Europe, and only old ladies wear head scarves, but not in the hijab style, more in the babushka (old grandmother) style. Young women in my family look like me (see avatar) and the old ones look like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/170/446780536_4f62e47d91.jpg http://motorola.100gsm.com/c550/babushka.jpg That's how they wear the headscarf, they either tie it in the front in a knot with their hair falling out or they tie in the back. It isn't really a hijab, just the type of head covering most old ladies in Eastern Europe wear. The hijab is the same thing, it's cultural more than religious. Muslims are taught to dress modestly but the extent of the hijab/niqab/etc is subjective based on culture. Some fundamentalists will argue with you and say that it is essential, but their argument isn't supported by any conclusive quotes in the Koran, they just think modest = covering your hair, sometimes face and even eyes, because that's what their culture thinks is modest. And I see a lot of Arab women who wear the hijab and they have on thousands of dollars of gold jewelry, a lot of makeup, colorful form fitted clothes, designer handbags, stiletto shoes and they wear perfume so strong you can smell it from several feet away. Don't tell me they're being modest. It's cultural for them to wear it so that's why they do. Even in countries where wearing the hijab/niqab is mandatory, women still manage to dress like this: (Iran) http://ivmp.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/2005102002.jpg (Iran) http://shahrzaad.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/161.jpg There is a whole fashion industry growing for women who wear the hijab, in Muslim countries. It really has little do with modesty and a lot to do with culture. And yes of course, they wear high heels.

Q: Can a muslim women is allowed to go to sufi graves?
Is a muslim women is allowed to visit sufi graves (dargah) for her soul treatment?

A: Muslim women are allowed to go any where, considering her safety and dignity first. Women are adviced to keep her self little away from common bublic places un neccassary for her own own safety and security. Now a person who already died can not benifit to any one, but yes we can get insperation from there life style and their teachings and preachings. We can go to offer prayers for died people and may ask God Almighty, maghfirah and higher positions inheavens, for them.

Q: why did muslim women only fight in the war in extreme circumstances in the middle ages?
i am doing a projstc about womens roles. and i found out tht muslim women only fought in extreme cicumstances but i dont know why.

A: This was true of women of all religions because combat in the middle ages, with the weapons they used at that time, required physical strength which not even most men had.

Q: Is it obligatory on the part of the Muslim women to wear black robe?
I don't understand why majority of Muslim women wear black robe? What is the significance of wearing black? in countries like India wearing black will be irritating since it hot for almost 10months a year and moreover the black will absorb heat. Give me a logical reasoning.

A: No it's not obligatory. The black robe (burqa or abaya) is traditionally and culturally related to Arabian culture. However, the Qur'an does recommend women to dress modestly and covering most of their bodies, face and palms apart, for their own protection against men's preying eyes. Yet, the holy book never dictated certain fashion or color of garments for women to wear. Try and see Muslim women in Southeast Asia countries, they wear more colorful and fashionable outfits that follows the scripture's saying.

Q: Who is the taxi diver married the the four muslim women teachers travelling in his taxi in a gulf country?
Teachers are muslim women. It has happened some years back in Kuwait or Soudi arabia

A: The following happened in KSA in 2005. Four female Saudi teachers, forbidden to drive under Islamic law, married their male driver, which is legal under Islamic law. The women joined in the communal marriage to live closer to work and cited the man's "good morals" as part of their decision. The women moved to the village where their school, and the male driver, are located. The women agreed to pay the man a portion of their salaries, but it was not reported whether that amount is equal, less or greater than their former cab fare. Sorry, do not know the cab driver. Take care.

Q: Why are people rude when they see muslim women?
I am a muslim women. I over my entire body when i go. Why is it a problem when people see me dressed like this? I see women dressed like men all the time. Do people mock them.I see men dress in drag ( yeah I see them get mocked) Why is it a big deal that I cover my body but its ok when a lady have short shorts on where you can almost see her ass. But i am crazy. Peoples way of thinking is backwards!

A: they feel that they are wicked compare to purity and modesty of muslim woman. Nobody like their reality exposed like that.

Q: Why do Muslim women in Malaysia not wear the hijab if it is an Islamic country?
I have the opportunity of travelling in Malaysia and from what I have been told, not all the Muslim women wear the hijab. Does this mean they are not really an Islamic nation?

A: Although most Islamic schools say that hijab is obligatory for woman, but many modern Muslim countries were influenced by secularism in the past century or so. Therefore, although not wearing the hijab is sinful act in Islam, it is much tolerated in many parts of the Muslim world. Even in Iran and Saudi Arabia, where hijab laws are strict, recent years found many women not adhering strictly to this law in many parts of these countries. You have to note however that committing a sin in Islam does not mean that you are not Muslim. So even if women don't wear hijab that does not make them non-Muslim. They will be regarded as sinful in this context only.

Q: How muslim women go for swimming?
If some muslim women at the muslim countries have to wear the hijab how do they go for swimming at summer? I mean muslim women who habitualy wear hijab. Or to countries where hijab is obligatory like Iran or S. Arabia.

A: There are special fashionable swimsuits for veiled women. They are very practical and decent. (some look like scooba-diving suits, but not so tight) Many non-veiled women who feel shy wearing a regular swimsuit choose the ones for veiled women, particularly in public beaches and swimming pools. Edit: For those who are thumbing down, are you doing so because you don't believe that there are special swimming suits for veiled women, or is it because you don't like to see veiled women swimming in public? I think that the thumbs down is made for wrong information only. If you have a different opinion, you should state it in you answer.

Q: why do muslim women and girls think they only have the intelligence of men and boys?
this can easily be proven. if muslim females would google '' do women only have half the intelligence of men. then read the hadiths and suras that confirm this. if then you say google is wrong and you still want look up the hadiths and suras listed that confirm this, are you stupid?

A: if you are not a decent muslim, it is hard for you to realize if the hadiths/suras are correctly quoted. everyone is created uniquely and what you're saying is totally ridiculous. besides; there are many women who are more intelligent than many men, or vice versa. intelligence does not depend on your sex, no matter what your religion is. what you have read there must be nothing but a misquotation. Allah grants everyone with different abilities, and it is only up to that person to realize them. i am a muslim girl, and i dont think i have half the intelligence of men. in fact; i beat all the guys in my class and got the top score in university entry exams. this proves those 'hadiths'(!) wrong. sorry, but you cant trick us with such a stupid question. He is the one that is always fair, and us muslims always trust him for that. as a muslim, i never felt like i was treated unequally. only people do unequal treatment. but Allah never does. get your facts right and then come back!
