Q: According to Mormon doctrine did God have a grandfather who progressed also?

A: There is no doctrine stating that God has a Father/Grandfather - or even that God progressed as you are suggesting. Some of the members of the church assume so, just because of the knowledge we have that WE can eternally progress. But, there is no doctrine stating what you are asking.

Q: Mormon Doctrine Questions?
Ok these are things that I have heard in lessons and in seminary...never really thought about how much they bugged me so I never questioned them until now. Anyway, I just want to know if any of you have heard these same thing...how true you take them to be..and where in the Book of Mormon and the Bible I can find where it says these things. 1. I've heard that after we die, if there aren't enough worthy men, we will start practicing polygamy in order to get into the celestial kingdom. I do know that in the temple, men can be married and sealed to more than one woman, but it can't go the other way around. This doesn't sit well with me and it doesn't make sense either....what if there are more men than women....what then?? And where does it say this in the scriptures? I refuse to believe this and it makes me mad that I've only been taught this once in any lesson...if this is a doctrine of our church, why dont they talk about it openly? And when people know about it....it doesn't seem like they think its a big deal. 2. I had a seminary class where the teacher said that in any other level of heaven besides the Celestial, there are no feelings...no love, no friendship, no nothing. What the heck? That was also the only time I ever heard that, where is that in the scriptures?? I really hope that isn't in there, and if isn't, I'm wondering where the heck he got that idea or interpretation!! 3. This same seminary teacher said that after the judgement and everything and we are in the celestial kingdom, women are gonna be popping out babies like crazy and treating them like currency. Again, that is ridiculously crazy to me and have no idea where he got that interpretation. Does anyone know about any of this? And I hope that people out there can act mature and not feel the need to post their childish and mean responses to this. Oh and hey thanks Chris for letting me know that Mormons are going to hell! That is extremely Christ-like of you! If the God you believe in would condemn good people to hell because they have a different faith...I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be a part of that. Maybe he will cast out dumb idiots like you who tell people they are going to hell...because really, who wants those kind of people in heaven anyway?? Not me.

A: 1. I can see why you'd have a hard time with this, but there are a few things to consider. First of all, there's a reason why God placed us in family units. Men and women are meant to work together, equal partners in creation sharing equal responsibility for the children given to them. The blessings that come with this partnership and with parenthood will naturally continue even after this life, which is why some of the greatest blessings God has to offer can be given only to those who have been married for time and eternity. ...which is precisely why women who remained alone or who had unworthy partners can be sealed to worthy men. God doesn't want any of us to be denied those blessings, especially when many of those women weren't alone by choice. This is just God's way of ensuring that we can all have everything He offers. Still, why does God allow men to have more than one wife but refuses to give women more than one husband? For one thing, many falsely assume that having more than one wife is a privilege or a reward. Of course that isn't true! Marriage, especially eternal marriage, is an honor and a responsibility, not some sort of prize. God isn't favoring the men...but God is still a God of order, and He's the one who decided that family relationships and lineage would be traced through the priesthood. After all, the main responsibility of a priesthood holder is to watch over his family, so it makes sense that our heavenly lineage would also be traced through the men (and it has to be traced through one of the genders rather than both, because otherwise everything would be chaos). Still, just as men and women benefit equally from the priesthood, women will not be at any disadvantage in the next life. God honors women too much for that. At any rate, I don't think we need to worry about there being more men than women, because statistically, I don't think that's ever been the case. Even so, God knows what He's doing. The whole concept of polygamy may seem distasteful to us now, but then we don't exactly have the big picture in mind, do we? We think of polygamy and only think of how terrible it seems for the women, how horrible it'd be to share a husband and how unfair it is that we'd have to share at all. We're thinking in selfish terms, and though it still seems horrible to me, God isn't as limited as we are. He wouldn't instigate something that would only cause chaos or misery, and until we're able to see the good in the practice as He does, we have to trust Him and rely on faith. As for speaking of this openly in the church...well, it's admittedly not something we teach on often, but that's probably because in the grand scheme of things, there are so many more doctrines that have priority. After all, there are far too many who still don't have a strong relationship with either our Father or our Savior or who don't understand even the most basic of doctrines. And if they don't get the basics, why would we teach on something that won't even be relevant to a good majority of the faithful members, let alone to those who are struggling? This doctrine is important, but it doesn't have as much bearing on salvation, and we need to teach the things that will most help people. If it still bothers you, though, you should take the issue to your bishop the next time you have an interview with him. I'm sure he can answer your questions better than I can anyway. As for the rest... 2. Your seminary teacher was...confused, because of course that's not true! When we die, we're still the same. We still have emotions and love and friendship. There's a reason why you've only heard this once! It's simply incorrect. 3. ...I don't even know what to say about the "babies as currency" thing. That's...atrocious, and also completely false. We don't know how spiritual children are created, but children are and always have been precious and would never be so lightly regarded. This view of your teacher's is completely against God. If I were you, I'd take your teacher's comments with a grain of salt. He's either confused or simply didn't express himself very well, but either way, the things he's supposedly teaching are just not accurate.

Q: Why is the Mormon Church's leadership afraid to publicly & openly teach ALL Mormon doctrine prior to baptism??
marcia19572002 said I am amazing but what did "pinkadot" say so maybe mormons themselves do not agree with each other now!!!!!!!

A: Maybe they have reason for concerns if thatis the case. I am sure they will not reveal everything about their rituals they do in the temples and if they did many may recnsider been a mormon

Q: Mormons...Does the "Mormon Doctrine" book written by Bruce R. McConkie mean anything to you?
I picked one up at the Library in the "Free books" stack. Is this an important book to the Mormon faith or does it not mean anything to you or the LDS? Just wondering.

A: It was originally written by Bruce R. McConkie prior to becoming one of the 12 apostles of the church. He published a later edition after his calling to the 12. It has some accurate information about Mormon beliefs but it also contains a lot of opinion of the author. Not an official church publication but it does show a pretty accurate picture of the beliefs of the general church membership at the time that it was published...it's just that some of the beliefs weren't actually doctrinal and are not what the general church believes now other than some of the older generation. Many parts of the church's Bible Dictionary in the church published Bible came from Mormon Doctrine.

Q: What do you think about the Mormon Doctrine which says good LDS will become a God like Jesus Christ himself?
http://www.mrm.org/topics/salvation/god-man-may-become http://www.utlm.org/onlineresources/mormonshopetobecomegods.htm

A: If you want the real scoop, go to the official LDS siteNot a variety of anti or ex mormon sites. There is no conflict with man wanting to attain more Christ-like qualities, and you might benefit from trying to emulate Christ yourself.

Q: This is for all you people who say that Mormon doctrine is wrong and is not in line with the bible.?
Revelation Chapter 2 Rev. beginning summary of chapter. He that overcomes shall gain eternal life, avoid the second death, inherit the CELESTIAL kingdom and rule many kingdom's. If Mormon's are so off then why in the very bible doe's it say that you will rule many kingdom's? Doe's that infer that you could become a GOD maybe? Why would revelation refer to a Celestial kingdom- Celestial kingdom would mean a higher kingdom? So there must be lower. If this means something different please let me know? But I think it is very clear what it means.

A: After reading all the responses to this, I marvel at how ignorant some people are about what Mormons believe, and like being ignorant. And want others to be as ignorant as they are. I gave a thumbs down to those I'm talking about.

Q: Mormons: What Mormon doctrine do you take as authoritative?
Do you take the writings of prophets to be authoritative? Do newer ones override older ones? What if the older one claims that his is unalterable? Beta: It's not research....I already know what you are supposed to take as authoritative. I want to hear it from you so that I can point out the inconsistencies.

A: I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. Could you be more specific? EDIT: Why would you want to point out inconsistencies? If you don't share our beliefs, then what would you gain by it, other than props from other anti-Mormons (not like that's anything to be proud of)? It seems like it would only consume you and your life, if you continue to try and find anything you can to try to prove us wrong. I mean, there's nothing in it for you. You should leave well enough alone, and say "To each his own." Besides, if our beliefs are wrong, then why do you think you're so passionate about proving it? What if maybe, just maybe, OUR beliefs (and not what you think we believe) are completely true and that's WHY you're so compelled to point out inconsistencies? I'm guessing you aren't taking this approach with other religions you disagree with.

Q: Problem with mormon salvation doctrine?
Have you noticed this obvious problem with mormon salvation doctrine:- They teach that one can only receive the gift of the Spirit by the laying on of their hands, yet Acts 10:45-47 details the gentiles receiving the gift while Peter is preaching & before they get baptised:- "While Peter yet spake these words . . . on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost . . .Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?" Havn't they done the same as others by replacing God's sign of speaking in tongues with a doctrine of men? So they havn't actually received the Spirit at all! (and so are not actually Christian!) Pokie - no sign is a sign that you need to go & see God mystey - I have the love of God so I want to help them and those that might be trying to find God in that organisation. Mysty - Jesus is the baptiser in the Spirit, he doesn't channel him through a man's hands, see also Acts 2:4. The Holy Spirit that gives the utterance in tongues also gives the interpretation when "the gift of tongues" is used in meetings. Pinka - PLEASR answer my question, I SPECIFICALLY point out that the gentiles received the GIFT of the Spirit before baptism. 7 of 9 - Mormons havn't got a monopoly on shirt & tie wearing, but my underwear is normal

However, the fulness of the blessings given through the Holy Ghost are available only to those who receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and remain worthy. After a person is baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one or more Melchizedek Priesthood holders lay their hands on the person's head and, in a sacred priesthood ordinance, confirm him or her a member of the Church. As part of this ordinance, called confirmation, the person is given the gift of the Holy Ghost. The gift of the Holy Ghost is different from the influence of the Holy Ghost. Before baptism, a person can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost from time to time and through that influence can receive a testimony of the truth. After receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, a person has the right to the constant companionship of that member of the Godhead if he or she keeps the commandments.

Q: Are lime green ties Mormon doctrine?
LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson told a reporter he likes lime green ties: http://www.kutv.com/content/news/topnews/story/Chatting-With-The-LDS-Church-President-Round-The/WiqBAPCzlEyt9gfEjU9reQ.cspx Does that mean lime green ties are doctrine? Anti-Mormons and atheists like to find old and insignificant quotes to claim as our doctrine (i.e. Adam-God, moon men, man-God, etc) How do you know when something is doctrine or not? Kristevon, if you have to dig through the bowels of our archives to find it, then it probably wasn't doctrine. In 100 years your progeny will be claiming lime green ties were somehow doctrine. You're pretty much the caricature of what I'm asking about.

A: Doctrine is in our scriptures and Edits by the First Presidency, every else is just opinion, including books, talks and speeches by General Authorities.

Q: mormons! what about the book "mormon doctrine"?
Bruce R. McKonkie, seemed to be a valid and true author as well as an apostle, is His work/book still a valid source of inspiration and true to the mormon Creed of Joseph Smith? After he died i heard a rumor that he died because he was not worthy, "taken - by the will of the LORD".

A: Oh no, please stay away from the Mormons, they're nuts! They do if it makes them look good in the eyes of their followers. Man, Joseph Smith was not even a real prophet. None of these men were.

Q: Mormon doctrine teaches the Holy Ghost is exclusive to LDS. Yet other churches teach of the Holy Ghost too...?
Are they talking about the same thing? Whenever someone is converted to LDS, they get the 'gift' of the Holy Ghost by the laying on the hands... If they leave the church, supposedly they lose that gift. It is made out to be a very exclusive 'gift.' So other churches have it too.. How could that be possible? Hey, this is a very strong doctrine of the church. It is a big deal to them to have this exclusive club of Holy Ghost holders.

A: The "Power of the Holy Ghost" can be felt by anyone. It is a gift from God to help man to recognize the truth of his gospel. The Holy Ghost can bare witness of truth directly to ones heart mind and spirit. The "Gift of the Holy Ghost" is a little different. It allows a person to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion to lead, guide and comfort. The "Gift of the Holy Ghost" can be conferred only by the laying on of hands by those who hold the Gods restored Priesthood. This is done shortly after baptism. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints does not claim to own or have exclusive rights to the Holy Ghost. It does, however, claim to be Gods restored gospel in the latter days. This includes Gods priesthood and the authority to confer the Gift of the Holy Ghost on it's members.

Q: BOOK OF MORMON Doctrine and Covenants, 132:17 concerning Polygamy?
Can anyone else think of any scriptures in the Mormon Bible that condone polygamy? Can you think of anything else that Brigham Young or Joseph Smith said concerning polygamy? I need some amunition against Mormons who are trying to get me to go back to church. Can someone help out here? D&C 132:17 God warned that the angels did not abide by his law; "polygamy" therefore they cannot be enlarged, but remain separately and singly , without exaltation, in their saved condition, to all eternity; and from henceforth are not gods, but are angels of god forever and ever. Brigham Young said that polygamy would damn more people than it would save. That's all I can really remember from being a member that made me think that if the church endorsed polygamy as soul saving stuff why then did they tuck tail and decide it wasn't right, even though the BOM says it is essential to exaltation. You're still brainwashed ducky. I feel sorry for you. Your historic leaders endorsed polygamy. Brigham Young had over 40 wives. So he was against God? Not according to you. They are still sealed to multiple people as their way to enter heaven. Holy cow, I was not aware. I need to find out how I can be ex-communicated immediately so that some weirdo doesn't try to seal himslef to me for procreation on his planet. HAHAHAH Thanks John for your kindness and not getting all defensive because i'm asking a question that goes against your beliefs.

A: Oh yeah! Check out the following (whole bunker of ammunition here): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversi... ("Criticism of Mormonism") for a detailed list of changes in their doctrine. Or http://www.realmormonhistory.com/ WARNING: "This site has proven to be disturbing to some Mormon believers" "I will now say, not only to our delegate to Congress, but to the Elders who leave the body of the Church, that he thought that all the cats and kittens were let out of the bag when brother Pratt went back last fall, and published the Revelation concerning the plurality of wives: it was thought there was no other cat to let out. But allow me to tell you, Elders of Israel, and delegates to Congress, you may expect an eternity of cats that have not yet escaped from the bag." Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City Tabernacle, June 19, 1853 Journal of Discourses Vol. 1, p. 188 Edit: Hey "Ducky," how come you ducked my questions the last time our paths crossed? Can you answer for the polygamy of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young? How about Brigham Young's whiskey distillery? And why were blacks banned from the priesthood until 1978? The Bible says that God does not change, so how is it that your "prophets" have allowed so much change throughout the history of Mormonism? Edit: "Ducky," so anytime a prophet gets a little horny he can just claim that Mormons need more seed? What about Brigham Young's whiskey distillery? I suppose you have an excuse for that too. And I suppose God removed the curse on blacks in 1978? How convenient, right during the hight of the civil rights movement. The cats just keep on coming...and that's according to your own "prophet," Brigham Young.

Q: This is very interesting i find it to be doing my research and actually came from the mormon doctrine.?
Mormons belive that Michael The Ark Angel is indeed Adam of ADAM AND EVE. If anyone else has heard this please say so christians or what ever your religion may be i encourage you not to be chicken and stand up for what you know even if your a mormon tell the truth it is in your laws.

A: While I don't ever recall hearing this in church, it appears that it's actually a part of Mormon scripture: "And the Lord appeared unto them, and they rose up and blessed Adam, and called him Michael, the prince, the archangel." (Doctrine & Covenants 107:54) What's interesting about this is that in the early church it was actually taught that Adam was *God*. This doctrine has been abandoned and is no longer recognized by the church, however...
