Q: How come my encyclopedia doesn’t support my Mormon beliefs?
I think there's a misprint or two in my encyclopedia...

A: An encyclopaedia simply reports facts. It is not it's purpose to support anything

Q: Is it true that according to Mormon beliefs a man can take more than one wife?

A: Nope. That is FLDS - the polygamists. They left the LDS church because they wanted to have more than one wife many years ago. The LDS church no longer practises polygamy.

Q: So, my Mormon beliefs aren’t in my encyclopedia because they are beliefs, not facts?
But, I was told since a child that these beliefs were the truth! All my life I’ve believed them, I’ve had no reason not to, but now you’re telling me that they’re not facts, they’re just beliefs? Are you freakin serious?? You’re telling me I was lied to as a child? OMFG!

A: Facts are what you make of them in the 70's it was a fact that we were slipping into a new ice age until about 3 months ago it was a fact that an impact killed all the dinosaurs (recently recanted, by the way) I can go on, but I dont wanna rant. "Facts" change all the time - this is a truth and you wont find THAT in an encyclopedia either. ∙ I tend to think that God must have left a better message than word-of-mouth and trusting human transcribers to faithfully reproduce what he wants to say to us though. Anyway - no one lied if they believed they were teaching the truth. Perhaps they make mistakes, but they are in human.

Q: What are the beliefs of the Mormon church?
I've heard about Mormonism, obviously, but I don't know anything about the basic ideas and concepts of it. I'm curious. Can anyone tell me the basic beliefs and customs and the like?

A: Joseph Smith responded to a similar question by providing the following information called the "Thirteen Articles of Faith. I have been a member all of my life, and there is NO Secret Information that we keep "hidden until you are fully indoctrinated" What a joke. 1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. 2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression. 3. We believe that through the atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. 4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. 6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. 7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth. 8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. 9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. 10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory. 11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. 12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. 13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. -Joseph Smith

Q: Are all Mormon beliefs considered "traditional christian beliefs" ?

A: No. Mormonism: 1) Rejects the truth that Jesus is God, which means that Mormonism has a different and fake "jesus" and a different and fake "god" 2) Rejects the truth that getting into heaven is only by faith in Jesus without works 3) Rejects the truth that only the Bible is the Word of God, but Mormonism adds the "book of mormon" falsehood Mormonism leads to eternal torment in hell

Q: What are the beliefs of a mormon?
One of my friends who i guess is a Mormon said that some things they believe is that u can't have a boyfriend or girl friend until u are like 16 and some other things do u know what things they can't do if u are a Mormon.

A: The dating thing is a guideline but not a commandment. another guideline is dressing modestly. Girls should have some sort of sleeve on their shirts, no short shorts/skirts, no bellys showin, no clevage, no more than one modest earring in each ear. Guys shouldn't have their pants falling off and look grungy. A commandment unique to our religion is the word of wisdom. In the Word of Wisdom, the Lord revealed that the following substances are harmful: * Alcoholic drinks (see D&C 89:5–7). * Tobacco (see D&C 89:8). * Tea and coffee (see D&C 89:9; latter-day prophets have taught that the term "hot drinks," as written in this verse, refers to tea and coffee). The Lord also declared in the Word of Wisdom that the following foods are good: * Vegetables and fruits, which should be used "with prudence and thanksgiving" (see D&C 89:10–11). * The flesh "of beasts and of the fowls of the air," which is "to be used sparingly" (see D&C 89:12–13). * Grains such as wheat, rice, and oats, which are "the staff of life" (see D&C 89:14–17). http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=bbd508f54922d010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=0692f73c28d98010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____ PS- we CAN do the sign of the cross, none of us want to though. It's just not something we do.

Q: Simple Mormon Beliefs??
Can some one just tell me some of the Mormon beliefs. I dont want long paragraphs or websites to look at. I just want to know the basic stuff. Also, how are they different from Christians? I know SOME say they are Christians but are they? And what is the "death pact"? Please be simple and brief, I just want some straight answers... Thank You?

A: God loves us and wants us to come back and live with Him again. This must be done by our free choice. Since even the best of us will from time to time choose the wrong things and thus we are barred from Heaven; God sent His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ to pay for our sins. We must then choose Christ through repentance and baptism. Then Christ will forgive our sins through His Sacrifice (Atonement). We believe the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price to be the word of God. We believe families can live together as families with God in Heaven. We "seal" our marriages in temples so that if we live worthily we will be a family in Heaven. Some Christians belittle our worship of Christ because they do not like that we believe in a Godhead consisting of -- God the Father, The divine Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost. We believe they are 3 separate entities with one purpose -- not unlike a husband and wife are one. So They are one God in purpose having separate spirits and bodies (although the Holy Ghost has no Physical body). Death pact -- I have never heard of it -- it is NOT part of LDS Doctrine. YW D

Q: what didn't people like about mormon beliefs?
i mean why did they chase them away to make them emigrate? what sort of beliefs did the mormons have that people didnt like? BESIDES POLYGAMY!!!!

A: There a lot of things that caused the Mormon migration. One of the big causes was that the Mormon community tended to stick together and vote in groups. (Which ironically is still a problem that people have with the Mormons, as demonstrated by Proposition 8 in California.) Imagine that you're living in Missouri in the 1830's and all of a sudden you have a large group of people move into your area who believe politically very differently from you and now have the voting power to elect Mormon officials. Slavery played a key role in these fears. This was before the Civil War and slavery still factored into the southern economy. In a matter of just a few years, the old city officials were replaced by newcomers who believed that slavery should be abolished. This threatened a lot of citizens. Along with this, the Mormons formed a militia to defend themselves from being persecuted. Although this was a perfectly legal practice, the people of Missouri became afraid that the large Mormon militia would go on the offense, rather than just defend themselves. Polygamy actually didn't play as big a factor as you might think. According to historical records of the time, most Mormons didn't practice polygamy, only a select few, and these marriages were not widely known outside of the Mormon community. Early Mormons sometimes inadvertently caused rifts with their neighbors by claiming to be the one true church. Many people took offense at this and feared that the Mormons would try to take over, and to an extent, their fears were somewhat justified by the fact the Mormons soon held most of the community leadership positions. (Not that their actions were justified, but you can see how they might fear a Mormon majority.) Mormonism was also a threat to the traditional Christian denominations. Southern religions are often more than just a church-they're a culture and a way of life. Losing membership to a new religion was not just seen as losing a congregation member-it was seen as losing a parent, child, brother, sister, or friend. And then there are the people who just ignorantly persecute things they are afraid of or don't understand. You can easily find examples of those in this forum. LOL

Q: Twilight saga full of Mormon beliefs?
I read on a Mormon website something about "immortality" being something to do with when Mormons die? I'm not sure, I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether Smeyer has threaded this into her immortal characters? choosing immortality over earthly existence? etc etc

A: I was mormon when I was younger, Nothing ive read in the twilight saga has reflected the mormon beliefs. However I was only mormon until I was 13 when I stopped going, so I don't remember everything. To me the whole thing sounds kinda silly, but I might be proven wrong

Q: How are the beliefs of a Mormon different from those of a Baptist?
I'm trying to find out the difference in beliefs between Mormons and Baptists. Can anyone help me out?

A: Being a Mormon, I wouldn't agree with the way Schneb worded things, but his suggestion of comparing traditional Christianity to Mormon Christianity is a good path to take. Baptists are closely aligned to much of what you would find as traditional Christian beliefs. The LDS religion does have many points that differ from traditional Christianity. I would say some of the most important differences are: A hierarchal leadership structure of Apostles and Prophets like Jesus organized in His original church. A belief in continuing revelation from God received personally and through the aforementioned church structure. The concept of the 'Godhead' of God the Father, Christ, and the Holy Ghost being separate and distinct but still one in purpose. A detailed "Plan of Salvation" derived from scripture of a timeline denoting a pre-mortal life, a mortal life including our time on earth and what happens when we die, and a post-mortal or eternal life. The Book of Mormon, another testimony of Jesus Christ that compliments and proves the truthfulness of the Bible. These are just a few of the many points that define the LDS faith that differ from more traditional Christianity such as the Baptist church. An excellent resource for learning more about the beliefs of the LDS church is http://www.mormon.org Or the Baptist Church as Schneb linked to: http://www.baptiststart.com

Q: How much of the Masonic practices and beliefs did Joseph Smith incorporate into the Mormon religion?

A: None - although there are similarities since they are derived from the same ancient sources.

Q: What archaeological evidence is there for Mormon beliefs?

A: There are plenty people just refuse to see truth and want to believe lies. here is a website that shows evidence. http://farms.byu.edu/

Q: What are the differences in Christian beliefs and Mormon Beliefs?
Also, what are Lattter Day Saints?

A: Latter Day Saints are Christians. They are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The differences between this church and other denominations is based on the premise that Priesthood authority which was lost to the world was restored by a modern day prophet.
