Q: What are different types/names of Jewish music?
So my english class read the book "The Color of Water," and we have to do a little project on it. The one I picked is to find Jewish music and play some for the class. I need help as to different names of Jewish music and when its typically played (bar mitzvah's, weddings, funerals, celebrations). It doesn't say how many we need but I would like at least 5.
-Thanks!
Please tell me specific song names that are important to the Jewish religion and why...
-Thanks!
A: Klezmer Music:
-----------------------
The word is Yiddish and means musician. However, it has come to characterize the style of secular music played by Ashkenazi Jews for joyful celebrations such as weddings.
Klezmer sounds like?
-------------------------------
It's intended to replicate the human voice, including sounds of crying, wailing and laughing. It is generally the violin's job to do this imitation. Often, a klezmer band will include a fiddle, a bass or cello, a clarinet and a drum. Secondary instruments include hammered dulcimers and accordion.
Nigun:
----------
A Hebrew term meaning “humming tune.” Usually, the term refers to religious songs and tunes that are sung by groups. It is a form of voice instrumental music, often without any lyrics or words, although sounds like “bim-bim-bam” or “Ai-ai-ai!” are often used. Sometimes,
Bible verses or quotes from other classical Jewish texts are sung repetitively in the form of a nigun. Nigunim are largely improvisations, though they could be based on thematic passage and are stylized in form. Nigunim are also sung as a Jewish prayer in the form of a lament. Other nigunim may be joyous or victorious.

Pizmonim:
---------------
Traditional Jewish songs and melodies with the intentions of praising God as well as describing certain aspects of traditional religious teachings. They are sung throughout religious rituals and festivities such as prayers, circumcisions, bar mitzvahs, weddings and other ceremonies

Zemirot:
------------
Hymns, usually sung in the Hebrew or Aramaic languages, but sometimes also in Yiddish or Ladino. The best known zemirot are those sung around the table during on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.

Piyyut:
----------
A liturgical poem, usually designated to be sung, chanted, or recited during religious services. Most piyyutim are in Hebrew or Aramaic, and most follow some poetic scheme, such as an acrostic following the order of the Hebrew alphabet or spelling out the name of the author.
Q: What genre of music would you call the Jewish style?
You know, like the music in The Prince of Egypt.
Specifically, Through Heaven's Eyes.
Also, if you know any good songs like that one, please feel free to suggest it.
A: "The Jewish style" of music is actually no one single style, but a wide variety of styles.
The film "Prince of Egypt" had a wonderful sound track! The music was a modern fusion of many traditional musical genres-- among them Bedouin, Yemenite, liturgical, and klezmer.
That particular song, "Through Heaven's Eyes" is a contemporary take on Middle Eastern music.
For similar songs, try a youtube search for "Israeli music".

Q: jewish music trivia question?

Q: How much would would cost to hire a small Jewish band (No more then 2 instuments) to play for four hours?
Band would preferably play some Jewish music
A: How much should it cost? :)
Q: What is the difference between Yiddish folk music and traditional Jewish classical music?
A: I'm not sure what you mean by traditional Jewish classical music but I'll venture a guess. Yiddish folk music is freqently the music of the home and celebration. It is generally non religious in tone and can be played on many musical instruments. "Classical music" as you call it, I think is probably the music of the synagogue and religious ritual. It is generally vocal only although some more liberal congregations may use an organ or guitar accompany the singer(s). Religious music consists of chants and songs.
Q: Information about Jewish and Yiddish festivals around the world?
I am interesting about Jewish and Yiddish (Or Ethnic with Jewish music included) events around the world, especially in Europe and Asia (Russia, former USSR Republics).
I will appreciate links,names etc..
A: Please have a look at the link below. It explains pretty thoroughly all of the holidays.
Q: Is there a Jewish version of Gospel music?
Like Jewish rock?
Jewish rap?
What type of music do Jewish people listen to in the temple or in their cars on the way there?
A: Music is a large part of Jduaism, most prayers in Temple are sung. Some people find the singing the most enjoyable part of the service. There are some Cantors (the person who leads the prayer service) who have even put out CDs of themselves singing traditional Jewish prayers and melodies. There are also many hundreds of traditional Jewish Songs that people sing at meals.
As for what people listen to in the car that has to do with personal preference. Most Jews I know who only listen to Jewish music only do so because growing up that was all they had to listen to.
Oh and there are plenty of Jewish rock bands who play similar type music liek christian rock bands but the music is Jewish. For some reason most of them sound liek hippie jam bands like the Greatful Dead. Moshav is one of the most popular ones, I don't like them.
There is a band that plays religiously inspired music but that is not actually a religious band called Orphaned land that plays prog metal similar to Dreamtheater but better because there is no Le Brie to screw up the singing.

Q: Recordings/sheet music of sephardic music?
I heard a wonderful program on the radio during Chanukah, with a song from the 15th century based on Hannah's lament, but they only played part of it. The group was called Western Wind. Does anyone know availability of recordings or sheet music for songs like this? I would like to get some not only for personal use, but to donate to the local library and schools. I want there to be more Sephardic and Jewish music accessible to my community.
A: Hey Fed Up with,
Here is a site that has sheet music. You can check to see if they have anything like that.
Q: jewish wedding and music?
Is there a part of the Jewish wedding or betrothal ceremony where music can be played other than during the processional and recessional? (like an interlude in a Christian ceremony during unity candle lighting) I've always wanted Mozart's Bei Mannern played during my wedding but it isn't appropriate for coming in before the ceremony or going out afterwards. It's about 3 minutes long. Thanks!
A: As Mark said, ask your rabbi. If you are orthodox, they will probably be reluctant to introduce secular music intot he ceremony, keepign it to the traditional songs and those normally sung in your shul. (Such as sheva brachos, and often a hebrew song about our sadness at the destruction of the temple before the glass is broken- the exact song varies by community.)
If you are Reform or Conservative, they will be mnore likely to allow its introduction.
