A: Your question is an interesting one. This is like asking, “Can people eat roaches?” You may reply “yes,” but many do not. The same here. Many “Christians” (or those who profess to be such) do have sexual intercourse before marriage. However, true Christians do not and cannot have sex before marriage. There are many people who call themselves Christians, but do not follow the way of the Christ, or better yet, do their own thing and live their lives they way they want.
If you are going to call yourselves “Christians,” you have to look at things from Christ’s standpoint. Would Jesus have pre-marital sex? Jesus spent his life on earth doing his father’s will, which you can read in your own copy of the Bible. Therefore, let’s break your question down by means of the scriptures.
Fornication is illicit sexual relations outside of Scriptural marriage. The Hebrew verb za•nah´ and its related forms convey the idea of harlotry, immoral intercourse, fornication, or prostitution. The Greek word translated “fornication” is por•nei´a. Regarding the meanings of por•nei´a, B. F. Westcott in his book Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians (1906, p. 76) says: “This is a general term for all unlawful intercourse.
Porneia is understood to involve the grossly immoral use of the genital organ(s) of at least one human; also there must have been two or more parties (including another consenting human or a beast), whether of the same sex or the opposite sex. (Jude 7) The unlawful act of a rapist is fornication, but, of course, that does not make the person who is forcibly raped also a fornicator.
Today, we have a Bible, which explains all of Jehovah’s laws and principles for our well-being. Yet, those who call themselves Christians still do things against Jehovah’s God’s will, principles, standards, and laws. Something is very wrong there. Are such ones who purposely disregard Jehovah’s laws to fulfill their own sexual desires and pleasures really Christians? Something to think about. Genesis 39:12, 13: “Then she grabbed hold of him by his garment, saying: “Lie down with me!” But he left his garment in her hand and took to flight and went on outside. So it occurred that as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in her hand that he might flee outside.”
Joseph fled from the situation. Him fleeing goes in-line with 1 Corinthians 6:18, which says to “flee from fornication.” He spared himself a lot of grief and pain, although the master’s wife lied and said that he did have relations with her, in which he was jailed for. Nevertheless, he remained faithful. Similarly, many of Jehovah’s Witnesses today are indeed persecuted for reasons such as these and are imprisoned. Despite imprisonment, Jehovah proves to be a refuge for such ones. (Psalm 18:2)
Sex before marriage (fornication) may not be a sin in the view of liberal clergymen and churchgoers, but it is a serious sin in God’s eyes! And so are adultery, incest, and homosexuality. Therefore, will you let some churchgoer or clergyman tell you what is acceptable and what is not, or will you let Jehovah God guide you, by means of the scriptures as to what is right and wrong?
There are clergymen and other religious figures who will tell you that premarital sex is okay. Who will you listen to? Here are some more scriptures in regards to how serious fornication is.
Leviticus 18:6: “YOU people must not come near, any man of YOU, to any close fleshly relative of his to lay bare nakedness. I am Jehovah.” (Incest is a serious sin in God’s eyes)
1 Corinthians 6:9, 10: “What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom.”
For one thing, fornication is sex without genuine commitment. And besides undermining self-respect, it can result in disease, unwanted pregnancy, and emotional pain. Above all, it violates God’s righteous standards. Hence, fornication reflects little or no regard for the present and future welfare and happiness of the other person. If you who call yourselves Christians, although knowing the law, still disregarded this principle and committed fornication, are you happy when your sexual partner leaves you as the sole caretaker of the unwed child?
Jesus Christ restored God’s original standard of monogamy (Matthew 5:32; 19:9) and showed the wickedness of fornication by classing it with murder, thievery, wicked reasoning, false testimony, and blasphemy. He pointed out that these come from within a man, from his heart, and defile him.
People commit fornication purposely. There is no such thing as an accidental act of fornication (or premarital sex). This particular act formed in the heart (the seed of motivation)
